Statutory Regulation

Page Contents

Some of the professions not regulated by GRCCT are regulated directly by act of law. This is called Statutory Regulation.

It is a criminal offence for an individual to practice a statutorily regulated profession without being listed on the appropriate register. There are many regulatory bodies in orthodox medicine including:

General Medical Council (Doctors)
Nursing and Midwifery Council (Nurses)
General Dental Council (Dentists)
General Pharmaceutical Council (Pharmacists)
General Optical Council (Opticians)
General Osteopathic Council (Osteopaths)
General Chiropractic Council (Chiropractors)

Each of these regulatory bodies has an on-line facility to check the validity of individuals claiming profession competence.

The register for many statutorily regulated professions in the health sector is administered by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Professions regulated by HCPC include:

Arts Therapists
Chiropodists/Podiatrists
Dieticians
Occupational Therapists
Orthoptists
Speech and Language Therapists

How to check a register entry for a practitioner in a statutorily regulated health profession?

In a similar manner to GRCCT regulated practitioners each HCPC regulated practitioner is issued a register number (sometimes referred to as a PIN number). The practitioner can be validated using this number or surname on the HCPC website.

You can use the HCPC online register to check whether a health professional is registered with HCPC

Please see the links page of the GRCCT website for details of UK and worldwide regulatory bodies.
